5 Nonfiction Film Books For Every Film Buff

Jette Schirmer September 8, 2021 September 8, 2021

All this time in quarantine got me thinking… About ways to be creative, and a nagging idea for a short film. Yes, by now you all know I went to film school so it’s about time I made something that wasn’t a silent, black and white, 16 mm actual celluloid …

Top 5 Sad Girl Books To Feed Your Emo Soul

You know we’re emo. You know we love rainy, gloomy days. It makes sense that we love a good “sad girl” book. You know, a book that doesn’t necessarily have a sad story (even though they often do) but one that makes you want to listen to Lana Del Rey, …

5 Best Book to Film Adaptations You Need to Read and Watch

Jette Schirmer May 5, 2021 July 11, 2021

Are film adaptations a genre? They should be. And whatever they are, I love them. Yes, I’m aware how controversial that is in the bookish world but I’m coming from the film school world.  It started with a class called “Film and Literature.” We weren’t always reading the exact book …

Welcome to Another Book on the Shelf, a book club podcast and blog! We’re Gen and Jette! In order to get ourselves out of our comfort zones of reading, we started a book club. Several months later, our podcast was born. Read more…

I got Dead but Dreaming of Electric Sheep by @paul I got Dead but Dreaming of Electric Sheep by @paulgtremblay as an ALC from @librofm and @williammorrowbooks and I’m still trying to wrap my mind around it. But that’s also why I love reading and finding books like that. I don’t need everything explained or to make sense. Just blow my mind and make me think.

Highly recommend listening to the audiobook. I haven’t seen what the text looks like on the page but I think the recording really added to the experience. It feels very close to home, given how technology is moving today, and that is what makes it scary.

We did an episode on Tremblay’s Cabin at the End of the World, and I can’t wait to read even more.

Gen has done a surprising number of summer activities, and we’ve even done a bunch together, including a baseball game, a book launch, and a visit to Toronto’s Book Bar.

Currently reading book two of the Windy City serie Currently reading book two of the Windy City series by Liz Tomforde and can I just say...Ryan Shay! So glad Jette was able to lend me her copies so I could climb out of the library hold trenches. (All the love to the library, of course, but I wanted them sooner!)

Don't get me wrong, Stevie and Zanders were cute, too, but Indy and Ryan have my whole heart. They just want what's best for each other, no matter what. I just need them to figure out that the obsession is mutual soon please!

If you're looking for a short and sweet summer rea If you're looking for a short and sweet summer read with haunted house vibes and a dash of folk horror, look no further than Wylding Hall.

Told in the style of an oral history, Wylding Hall tells the story of '70s folk band Windhollow Faire through a series of interviews with the remaining band members. They recount the making of the album that made them famous, recorded during a single summer at the manor house Wylding Hall. It doesn't take them long to realize that something strange is going on in the old house, but it still seems to the band like a perfect artsy summer until it isn't.

The vibes are: A bit of The Wicker Man mixed with Daisy Jones and the Six while a '70s folk record plays in the background and a summer breeze rustles pages of old occult books in an abandoned manor library.

An ever-present line on Jette’s to-do lists and re An ever-present line on Jette’s to-do lists and resolutions - learning to draw.

Urban sketching is so fascinating to me and feels approachable, so we’re trying to dive in. Of course, we actually need to practice. Aka create the habit, which is why I got this book by @daribodrawing. It breaks everything into great little pieces, and I feel like I can actually do it (if I practice…). And I love watercolour, which is also on the list (and yes, we already have all the supplies), and it goes hand in hand with this type of sketching.

Hopefully all of this will lead to mycology illustration as well as making my own graphic novels. ☺️

In episode 204, Gen and Jette freak out over mushr In episode 204, Gen and Jette freak out over mushrooms and T. Kingfisher’s What Moves the Dead, book 1 in the Sworn Soldier series.

We both meant to read “The Fall of the House of Usher,” which this book is based on, before we recorded, but unfortunately...life. It’s on the list now!

Please send Jette all recos for anything fungi-related- books, cute things, forests to run to. 🍄🍄‍🟫

Okay, well, yes the trip is booked but also I was at the mercy of the library and have been waiting for months for the book😆 (and we just saw @stephaniearcherauthor interviewing @maggienorthauthor last week!)

Starting with the goalie felt like such a treat. So many other series you get hints then have to wait. We love a grumpy goalie. And I liked Pippa’s journey with music. Sometimes artistic endeavours are not done well in books but I like this one.

Can’t wait for the rest of the series.

Episode 203 is another instalment in our Page to S Episode 203 is another instalment in our Page to Screen series. This time, we read Clockers by Richard Price and watched Spike Lee’s film adaptation of the same name.

We loved how the book and the film each have their own distinct vibe and definitely need to watch more Spike Lee films. (And maybe rewatch The Wire?) Richard Price has also written screenplays, including The Wire, The Deuce, and the Martin Scorsese film, The Color of Money, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

This was Mekhi Phifer’s first film and he got the part through an open casting call. Wild!

Highly recommend this combo of book and film.

Do you prefer to read at a coffee shop or at home? Do you prefer to read at a coffee shop or at home?

I love the idea of reading in a coffee shop, but the ADHD always gets me. I people-watch. I listen to the sounds of a cafe. I take pictures of my book and my coffee. I always feel like I have to be ‘on’ for some reason.

So back to the couch for me. I have a reading chair in my reading corner. I have another comfy chair by the window. But lately, it’s just been my raggedy old couch and my romance book against the world 😆
