2: Artemis by Andy Weir

2: Artemis by Andy Weir

In Episode 2 Gen and Jette discuss their very first book club selection–Artemis by Andy Weir.

Weir sets his second novel in the nearish future of the late 2080’s in the first human moon colony, Artemis. The story follows Jazz Bashara, a porter with a talent for engineering and a pile of debt. She has spent years smuggling contraband into Artemis as a way to survive. And then she has the opportunity to pull off a heist that will set her up for life. It’s the perfect crime. Until she realizes that’s she’s smack in the middle of a conspiracy to seize power in the city. Then she’s on the run to protect both her life and the only the city she’s ever known.

Weir brings the same impeccable research that he brought to The Martian to deliver another science fiction tale that feels not just plausible, but possible. The girls discuss its position in the science fiction genre, how capitalism and global economics inform the story, and main characters that just aren’t very likeable.

Artemis by Andy Weir was a great first book club selection and we hope you love it too!
