30: Cherry by Nico Walker

30: Cherry by Nico Walker

In Episode 30 Gen and Jette talk about Cherry by Nico Walker, our 2019 September/October book club selection. This semi-autobiographical novel tackles war, addiction, and bank robbery. It follows an unnamed narrator through a tour in Iraq as an army medic, and then home, where his resulting PTSD triggers his descent into drug addiction. He begins robbing banks as a way to fund his addictions. The story a harrowing examination of the traumas of war and the American opioid epidemic. It would be weird to say we enjoyed Cherry by Nico Walker, but it was an excellent read and made for great discussion.

Show Notes

Jette heard about this book on The Watch podcast with Chris Ryan.

The Podcat makes an appearance, Jette is sick and sounds weird, and the table keeps creaking so please excuse the sound oddities.

This novel is being adapted for the screen by the Russo Brothers and will star Tom Holland.

Top Gun is about the Navy. Maverick is a Naval Aviator.

Read along with our new bookclub book: The Institute by Stephen King.

We only mentioned one book and it was The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway.
