In Episode 10 Gen and Jette discuss Heartbreaker by Claudia Dey, our 2018 November/December book club selection. We’re officially caught up on book club episodes! And this one was written by a local Toronto-based author.
Dey’s quirky novel revolves around Billie Jean Fontaine. She stumbles into an isolated town and the mysterious cult that runs it, only to disappear one October night fifteen years later. The story plays out over three different perspectives: the girl, the boy, and the dog. As each perspective unfolds, the reader gets a little bit more about Billie Jean, their strange community, and the intertwined relationships between the characters. Each perspective was like the click of a kaleidoscope, refracting the story into something new.
Heartbreaker by Claudia Dey is unlike anything else we’ve read and we had so much fun discussing it on the podcast. We talk about love, loss, family, cults, and the 80’s. We also tested our knowledge of Canadian geography (possibly lacking). If you’ve read Heartbreaker, let us know what you thought.
