I'm still way behind my audiobook goals for 2026, I'm still way behind my audiobook goals for 2026, but I did recently finish listening to The Hollow Places. I enjoyed T. Kingfisher's creepy take on a portal world, where instead of wonder our main character encounters terror.

It was delightfully horrifying and grotesque, but I was also left wanting a little but more. I can't quite put my finger on what it was that was missing for me, and it could be the result of how inconsistently I was listening to it. Or maybe when it comes to portals, I do want a little bit of magic.

I think my favourite part was the Wonder Museum—the tourist attraction collection of strange novelty items and taxidermy that belongs to Kara's uncle and that she offers to run while he's having knee surgery. I wouldn't want to visit the sinister willow world on the other side of the wall, but I would like to visit the Wonder Museum.

I went to the Toronto International Festival of Au I went to the Toronto International Festival of Authors @festofauthors on the weekend and the only pictures I took were of the Victoria College campus while I was eating lunch. (Can you blame me? Look how gorgeous it is!)

I went to some amazing author panels and came away with a long list of books to add to my TBR. I love listening to other writers talk about their process and inspiration and genres, and the panels paired authors up in a way that made for really interesting conversations. It was my first time going to TIFA and I'll definitely make time to go next year, too.

For those interested in the books, here's the list:

Honeysuckle by Bar Fridman-Tell @barfridmantell
Villain Hitting for Vicious Little Nobodies by Lindsay Wong @lindsaywong.m
Homebound by Portia Elan @portiaelanwrites
The Formosa Exchange by Huang Chong-Kai, translated by Jeremy Tiang @jeremy_tiang
Hemo Sapiens by Emily A. Weedon @emily.weedon.creates
The Summer Fun Massacre by Craig DiLouie @craigdilouie
We Were Never Here by Sophia Hannan @sophhannanwrites
The Woods by Jessica Hamilton @jhamiltonauthor

It was truly a pleasure to hear each of these authors speak and I can't wait to read their books.

Finding new bookstores is always a top priority wh Finding new bookstores is always a top priority when travelling ☺️ And then you have to buy books there to support them of course.

I contained myself as much as I could, aka I didn’t buy the whole Vancouver Storm series at @perfectmatchbookshop, but I did buy the first in the Queen’s Cove series. (And I found all my book boyfriends, obviously. Oh Cole Harding.)

@upstartandcrow was such a cool bookstore and I found a bunch of @coachhousebooks books!! I got a short story collection there - Always need more short stories for inspo.

I could have spent hours perusing @massybooks and @nooroongji.ca. Highly recommend!

What bookstores should we look for the next time we’re in Vancouver?

I LOVE Halloween but HATE dressing up. I don’t know why but it’s true. If I did need to dress up, though, I’d 100% dress as Erica Slaughter. She’s my favourite graphic novel character ever.

Thanks to @netgalley, I got to read this novel version of Something Is Killing The Children by @jamesthefourth and @authorkierstenwhite. It was really cool to actually be in the head of all of the characters, reading their inner monologues. I did miss @wertherscut’s art though. Can’t wait to dive back into the series now.

This time we’re talking about Never Whistle at Night, a collection of Indigenous dark fiction stories edited by Shane Hawk and Theodore C. Van Alst Jr. We loved this one so much and can’t wait to read the next volume!

Podcast fave, Stephen Graham Jones, writes an incredible introduction to this collection.

We didn’t have time to talk about every story in this collection, so we highlighted some of our favourites, but honestly, every story is so good, you should definitely read the whole thing.

Never Whistle at Night Part II: Back for Blood just came out, so if you need more Indigenous horror, make sure to grab a copy!

We’re keeping the spooky theme going with our next episode, which is also a book club episode. It’s time to talk about Moonflow by Bitter Karella!

Our next episode is our annual spooky season pick (as if we’re not spooky all year round). We’ll be chatting about Never Whistle At Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology.

Still shaking our heads and thinking about how we’ve grown the podcast and our little community here ☺️Have you been with us for all 8 years? Let us know your fave episodes below!

I found myself smiling and giggling as I walked around the city. Each new day was shocking and surprising and kept me on my toes. Carl's Doomsday Scenario finally came in so I can continue on my Dungeon Crawler Carl journey.

I can't resist a Stephen Graham Jones novel. Especially in October. Especially when he's playing with the slasher genre. And it's only the first in a trilogy, so there's more to come when I finish it.

And since we're reading Never Whistle At Night for our spooky October episode, I'm hoping to at least read a few from the second collection, Back for Blood, before we record. (Also giving slasher vibes with that title. I know what I like!)
I finally had time to read the last book in the Wi I finally had time to read the last book in the Windy City Series, Rewind It Back. Rio was one of my favourite recurring characters throughout the series and I loved getting to see his love story play out. He and Hallie had the sweetest relationship, and while I don't always love flashbacks in second chance romance, I loved seeing how their love grew since they were kids.

My only complaint was that Rio never finds out that Hallie has been drinking almond milk in her lattes this whole time just so he can have a sip! I can only hope it comes up at some point if they make a guest appearance in Liz Tomforde's next series, which she sets up at the end of this one.

Going to be counting down the days until Cardinal Rule is released on March 2 next year! In the meantime, time to reread In Her Own League?

And I couldn't resist picking up this poetry collection, Re: Wild Her by Shannon Webb-Campbell, while I was at the @bookhugpress booth!

And finally, another essay collection called Women, Walking, this one from @coachhousebooks, all about walking. This one mixes essays with comics and other styles and I can't wait to dive in!

I might have to snag a copy of Rebecca Solnit's Wanderlust: A History of Walking to make up a little syllabus for myself on the subject.
