Jette Schirmer December 9, 2022 December 9, 2022

A first line can suck you into a book just like a pretty cover. With NaNoWriMo happening, I’ve been thinking a lot about writing (but not writing — you know we never ACTUALLY do any writing) and how important a first line can be. It sets the tone. It hooks …

In Episode 208, we’re talking about Espíritu by Ai In Episode 208, we’re talking about Espíritu by Aiden Thomas, the sequel to Cemetery Boys, which we talked about way back in Episode 57!

It was so much fun to be back with these characters and in their world of spirits and brujx. We wish we could have spent more time with them. Maybe a book for our girl Maritza next? We would be all over that!

Do you believe in spirits? 👻 Have you seen a spirit?

On record, we now know that Jette wants her funeral to be an exact recreation of the My Chemical Romance “Helena” music video. 🥀

No, but seriously, @aidenschmaiden, please can Maritza get a book next?

While in Berlin I did manage to read Rebecca Solni While in Berlin I did manage to read Rebecca Solnit's A Field Guide to Getting Lost. It's a collection of essays all centered around various themes of loss and what is means to be lost. She weaves personal narrative with history in a way that I absolutely love.

I actually started reading this on my Kobo, as a loan from the library, but ended up finding a copy at a little bookstore and decided to buy it.

In between each essay, she writes an interlude of sorts titled "The Blue of Distance." In the first section, she recounts the history of painters rendering the blue of distance in their work, and then the use of cyanotypes in photography. Images rendered in blues.

I went to a flea market later in the day after buying the book, and there was an artist selling her cyanotypes. Each original includes on the back the artist's signature, the date it was made, and the length of the exposure of that specific piece. Even when playing with the same image, the different exposure times mean no two are alike.

I love a good bit of synchronicity, so of course I had to buy one. The one that I bought belongs to a series of under water images she concluded in the summer. More blue. It's maybe one of my favourite art pieces that I've ever bought.

I didn't get nearly as much reading done as I was I didn't get nearly as much reading done as I was hoping to on my vacation. It was too hot in France for my brain to concentrate (I ended up rereading The Long Game).

But I did get to hang out in some cafés in Berlin, where the weather was perfectly autumnal, and managed to get at least some reading time in between chats with my sister. I could spend my life just drinking coffee and reading in this city.
