Finally! It’s Autumn! There will be afghans, sweaters, knitting, hot beverages, and reading. With the breeze getting crisper everyday, I feel life in my lungs again. I ended up reading 3.5 of the 5 books on my summer TBR list and, considering the heat waves killing my brain, I take that as a win.
Summer reading was for #IcedCoffeeReads but it’s #SpookySZN now so a lot of these lean to the darker side. Personally, it just makes much more sense for me. Check out my Autumn TBR below, and add a few cozy Autumn books to your repertoire too.
5 Cozy Autumn Books on Jette’s Shelf
1. The Gray Man by Mark Greaney
Just like when The Bourne Identity came out, I devoured the book first. In preparation for this coming to Netflix next year with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans (hello), I want to read the book this fall. It’s about a freelance assassin and former CIA operative trying to save a family being held hostage in Europe. I always forget how much I love a good spy thriller.
2. Map of Days by Ransom Riggs
This is the fourth book in the Miss Peregrine series, coming in after Library of Souls. I also didn’t realize that the sixth book was already out so I need to catch up! The group of peculiars are now in modern day America. Continuing to use found pictures as inspiration for characters, I can’t wait to see who else Riggs introduces to Jacob and his friends.
3. We Keep the Dead Close by Becky Cooper
I haven’t read a true crime story in years but this has been on my list for ages and I really want to get into it soon. It is the story of an unsolved murder from 1969 at Harvard. Cooper came across the story forty years later and for ten years, she learns about a possible affair with a professor, the gender inequality at the school, and the empowered male culture that was rampant at the time of the murder.
4. We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Despite having a collection of Jackson short stories, I’ve never read any. We’re going to watch this book’s adaptation for our October virtual movie hangout, so this fall is the perfect time to read the iconic story. It follows Merricat, who lives with her sister and uncle on an old estate in Vermont. The family suffered a horrific tragedy six years prior and have been outcasts from their small village ever since. I have no idea what will happen but I am very excited to read and watch.
5. His & Hers by Alice Feeney
I needed to put one typical thriller on the list, of course. This book was huge last year and since sometimes reading is impossible, I haven’t got to it yet. I’m ready now though. A woman is murdered (sold) in a British village (sold) and a detective is suspicious of a reporter’s interest in the case (sold). After blazing through The Guest List this spring (also a murder in a small British town), I cannot wait to dive into His & Hers.
Autumn Reading Realness
True, most of my list isn’t cozy in the typical sense but they’re cozy to me and perfect for autumn reading. Somehow I’m ahead of my reading goal after the summer, so let’s keep it going. Grab your sweater, make a latte, and find a spooky book to read. Should we go with #CableKnitReads for the fall season?
