Remember when we thought 2020 was the worst of it? Wow, we were ever wrong! Reading slumps, writing slumps, life slumps… Not really sure what 2022 will bring us but hopefully it’s better than this past year. *Knocks on wood.*
Like many people, I turned to all things Marvel to comfort me throughout the pandemic. I have watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier too many times! I did, however, also spend a lot of time going for walks and listening to memoirs which is probably why they feature prominently on my fave books of the year.
Top 3 Best Books of 2021
We wanted to keep this short and sweet so I only picked my top three best books of 2021 but if I was allowed an extra A Very Punchable Face by Colin Jost is absolutely also on the list!
- Sigh Gone: A Misfit’s Memoir of Great Books, Punk Rock, and the Fight to Fit In by Phuc Tran
- Recursion by Blake Crouch
- This Will All Be Over Soon: A Memoir by Cecily Strong
The 2021 StoryGraph Goal
Last year my goal was to read 20 books and I actually read over 30, so I set my goal at 30 for 2021. (Side note: As I write this, I’m at 29 books with all of December to go. I have three books half way done and two more books that have to be read for the podcast.) I also plan to spend the holidays reading through my stack of new graphic novels so let’s see how that goes!
Writing in 2021
Writing didn’t really happen this year but a lot of thinking and planning did. Am I writing a fanfic story? Maybe. Am I going to tell you who it features? Definitely not LOL. Writing is writing and I’m just glad I’m inspired.
I’ve also been focusing more on editing, working with a friend who writes and illustrates graphic novels. It’s a new venture but I am obsessed. I am excited that I’ll be working with him to turn my own stories into graphic novels, which is my next writing challenge.
Looking Back at 2021
To be honest, I think I’m just going to look forward to 2022. Nothing in 2021 really went as I’d hoped. No travel. No big changes. Just lots of solo apartment time with the #podcat. But that is okay.
In 2022, I’m going to focus on all things comic/graphic novels. Learning to do proper lettering, flatting (it’s part of the colouring process), and getting my stories ready to be drawn. While not much happened in 2021, at least I figured out what my true writing/creativity passion is. Get ready for all the posts about graphic novels. Can’t stop. Won’t stop. See you in the comics!!
