19: Genre Breakdown – What is YA?

In Episode 19 Gen and Jette do another genre breakdown by asking, “What is YA?” We talk about the history of Young Adult literature, its recent rise in popularity, and which books are categorized as YA. It’s a genre that’s come a long way since we were teenagers and it was fascinating to see how the genre has changed and expanded.

To answer “What is YA?” in our genre breakdown, we also take a look at audience and subject matter. YA is far more open to inclusivity and representation than your average novel. And it’s not just for teens. We pull apart the qualities in YA that draw an older readership. And of course we talk about some of our own favourites because, well, we’re part of that older readership. We love YA!

Show Notes

It turns out that the reason Jette thought the Miss Peregrine movie was Tim Burton-esque it because it WAS a Tim Burton Movie.
